Green up your home

Some easy, green choices…

Apart from recycling, simple, everyday things can contribute to a greener home and a greener planet.
Green isn’t just a colour – it is philosophy. Being eco-friendly means being aware that everyone is responsible for the future and the world we leave to our children…
Our homes are the mirrors of our life philosophy. Despite popular beliefs, green alternatives are more frugal than others. Furthermore, we get many other benefits by practicing them – we reduce the quantity of waste, we breathe cleaner air, eat healthier food, live mindfully; we help our kids grow up in a healthier environment. Once they acquire this approach, they will practice the same when they grow up and pass it on to their children.
Here are some simple things we can practice at home and improve our lives. If there are some you are already practicing, try out some new ones…

  • Replace your home appliances with energy efficient ones,
  • Stop using disposable bags,
  • Create your own compost bin or recycling post,
  • Stop buying and using disposable plastic bottles and start using reusable glass bottles
  • Wash your laundry using eco programs and eco detergents,
  • Turn off the lights when leaving the room,
  • Use day-light whenever possible,
  • Use your car conscientiously and rationally; walk or ride a bike whenever possible,
  • Plant some herbs in your garden, your terrace or your balcony,
  • Support your local economy and shop locally,
  • Turn off your home appliances completely – don’t leave them in a stand-by mode; unplug chargers and appliances you are not using,
  • Use paper rationally – reuse if possible, print on both sides, pay your bills on-line,
  • Fix leaking faucets,
  • Use home-made and natural household cleaners,
  • Lower the temperature on your hot water heater,
  • Try to reuse or repurpose things,
  • Use cloth instead of paper towels to clean your home.
